From Accidental Fasting To Intentional Ketosis: My Journey
It started with a voice in my ear. I was listening to the Diary Of A CEO podcast, fascinated by how accessible the guests made complex medical topics. Episodes featuring Dr. Alan Goldhamer, Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, and Dr. Annette Bosworth caught my attention. They all spoke passionately about one thing: Fasting.
The concept stuck in my head, but it took a busy workday to turn theory into practice.
One morning, I rushed to the office without breakfast, counting on finding food along the way. No luck. I figured I’d eat at the office cafeteria. No luck there, either. I settled for a black coffee and buried myself in work. When lunchtime finally arrived, I had a realization that felt profound in its simplicity: I had gone half a day without food, and I was completely fine.
The next day, I skipped breakfast on purpose. That small win strengthened my resolve. I dove deeper, listening to the audiobook of Can Fasting Save Your Life? by Dr. Alan Goldhamer. That book shifted my perspective entirely. I went from skipping breakfast to wondering, Could I fast for days? Weeks?
Intermittent fasting (18:6) quickly became my new normal, and my health biomarkers improved. But the more I read—especially the works of Dr. Jason Fung—the more I stumbled upon the science of Ketosis.
I assumed I was already in ketosis because of my schedule, so I decided to test it. I learned about blood ketone meters from Dr. Annette Bosworth’s episode. I bought a device, pricked my finger, and waited. The result was a disappointment: my BHB was less than 0.5 mmol/L. I wasn’t even close.
I realized I needed to refine my approach. I studied, adjusted my diet, and attempted a 36-hour fast.
At 23 hours: I tested my blood. The meter read 1.8 mmol/L. Success.
At 42 hours: I was still going strong. The reading hit 3.0 mmol/L.
I decided to stop there and broke my fast with a well-earned dosa.
Learning to toggle in and out of ketosis has been a game-changer. It has relieved pains I’ve carried for years. Now, my goal is simple: live a healthier life and help the people around me discover the power of metabolic health.
